Bill to Amend Manipur GST Act Tabled in Lok Sabha by Finance Minister Sitharaman

The Union government on Monday introduced the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the proposal to update the 2017 Manipur GST Act, aiming to enhance transparency, efficiency, and compliance within the state’s tax administration.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday introduced the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha, seeking the House’s approval for a fresh round of updates to the northeastern state’s GST framework. The proposed legislation aims to revise portions of the Manipur GST Act, originally enforced in 2017, to bring it in line with evolving tax administration needs.

Moving the Bill for consideration and passage, Sitharaman underscored the government’s intent to ensure that the tax regime remains transparent, efficient, and responsive to current economic realities. According to official sources, the amendments are designed to refine key provisions of the law, streamline compliance, and strengthen the overall GST architecture as implemented in the state.

The introduction of the amendment marks another step in the Centre’s ongoing effort to harmonise GST-related laws across states while ensuring that local tax mechanisms remain robust and aligned with national standards. Members of the House are expected to review the proposed adjustments before the Bill advances through the legislative process.

By updating a law that has been in force for nearly eight years, the government seeks not only to modernise tax procedures but also to reinforce confidence in the administration’s commitment to improving fiscal governance. The proposed changes, once enacted, are likely to influence how businesses in Manipur navigate the GST system and may contribute to more streamlined revenue operations across the region.
